Petty Kings

Team based Professional project

A professional project working within a multidisciplinary team. We worked with an industry contact to concept and create a game for use in museums.

The result was Petty Kings a choice based village management game about being a Pictish King.

I assisted with concepting, design work, UI design and the testing process.

The Project

Working with an industry contact, the project first had up pitch six ideas before focusing development on one. As part of the team I mainly worked on design related tasks including working on the UI.

One lesson I found important was the experience of having school children come in to test the game. I took observational notes and learned some interesting lessons. For example, the logo and the portrayal of the game skewed towards an expectation of violence or battles. These 'optics' led to boys playing the game and most girls avoiding it. Girls were much more inclined to play when the experience was described (town management) and often seemingly enjoyed it more - including the battles.

With this project I gained experience creating a game as a team over a long period. I learned much about how to conduct myself in a team environment and in working with a client. As well as gaining experience within the Unity engine and using Github for source control and bug reporting.
